Lady Bulldogs Softball win first game of state

Greenwood Advances to Quarterfinals

After winning the 5A west Conference on Monday night, the Greenwood Lady Bulldog softball team went on to win their first round bout against Pulaski Academy in the 5A State Softball Tournament held in Sherwood, Friday afternoon, with a final score of  7-2. The Lady Dogs started slow, but they came alive in the third inning. Coming from a 2-1 deficit, Greenwood began its battle back when Natalie Nelms hit a hard shot to center field driving in a pair of scores by Keeley Treece and Paige Fair bringing the score to 3-2 in Greenwood ’s favor. This was a lead that the Dogs would never relinquish. They kept the run going by pounding the ball throughout the 4th inning with a double to center by Jill Barrett, followed by a triple to right field by Helen Zyjewski driving in Nikita Gragg, who was running for pitcher Jordyn Cleavenger and Barrett. Zyjewski topped of the inning by stealing home on a wild pitch to bring the score to 6-2.

On the defensive side, Greenwood was strong throughout the game.  Highlights included a double play in the 2nd that began with  Barrett fielding a hard drive to short, making the quick throw to 2nd base where Nelms made the force out, and then threw to Fair at 1st to make the double complete. Also, helping on the defensive side was solid pitching from Jordyn Cleavenger. She struck out the first three batters in the 4th inning and ended the game in the top of the 7th inning by striking out the first three batters again. Cleavenger ended the game with a total of 12 strikeouts.
